  1. BACKGROUND

The department of Physiotherapy is one of the foundational departments in Federal Medical Centre, Owo. The department commenced clinical activities in one of the offices in the present Male Medical Ward in the year 1994 when a Corper Physiotherapist was posted to the Centre for compulsory one year of National Youth Service Scheme.  In year 2008, the physiotherapy building was completed and this has expanded the scope of practice of physiotherapy in the Centre.

Physiotherapy department is currently located beside Radiology department at the back of old administrative block.

  • SERVICES

The major services in the department are to assess, treat, rehabilitate and educate patients refer for physiotherapy both on Out-patient and In-patient basis.  The department services are broadly categorized into three:

  1.  Clinical Services: Inpatient and Outpatient

i.        Surgical Out-patient clinic

ii.       Orthopedics Out-patient clinic

iii.      Medical Out-patient clinic

iv.      Paediatric Out-patient clinic

v.       Obstetrics and Gynecology

  • Fitness program/ Gym
  • Healthron services.

Patients admitted on the wards are attended to on daily basis while those who are clinically stable are usually brought to the department for further rehabilitation.

Out-patients clinic days are as stated in the table below:

Every Monday remains the general ward round for all units within the department.

Clinics usually operate from Monday to Fridays between the hours of 8:00am to 4:00pm while call officers take call hours from 4:00pm on week days and all hours on weekends and public holidays.

HEALTH/FITNESS PROGRAM 

The department offers fitness program for members of staff and the public who wish to improve on their fitness level. The departmental gymnasium is open for this service every week days from 4pm to 7pm and on weekends from 10am to 5pm.

Staff monthly fitness walk/aerobics was also introduced by the Physiotherapy department and approved by the Hospital Management as a means to encourage members of staff to keep fit and to raise awareness of the role of physical fitness in the society.  This comes up every second Saturday of the month and the turn-out has been quite impressive. Similarly, an aerobic club supervised by the department comes up every Thursday between 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

  • DEPARTMENTAL EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

There is a review of all the newly referred cases of in-patients every Monday morning. Also, departmental seminar holds fortnightly.

Training Program

The department has been accredited for internship training and more than 10 sets of interns has been successfully trained since the commencement of the program.

  • DIVISIONS

For ease of administration and enhancement of clinical specialties, the department is currently organized into the following different units:

  1. ORTHOPAEDICS/SURGICAL UNIT

The orthopaedic/ surgical unit is headed by Mrs Subulade A. T (Assist. Director Physiotherapist) and assisited by Mr Areoye J.O. (Chief Physiotherapist). The unit runs both in and out-patient clinics. Various orthopaedic conditions relating to different degrees of musculoskeletal dysfunctions such as low back pain, cervical spondylosis, post immobilization stiffness following immobilisation of body joints, fractures, arthritic conditions e.t.c are managed by this unit. Also, patients in ICU requiring chest physiotherapy, maintenance of joint ROM, positioning such as patients with burns injuries are attended to by the unit.  

Surgery/Orthopaedic Team: Mrs Subulade A.T

  1. MEDICINE/NEUROLOGY UNIT

This unit deals with the management of Medical/Neurological conditions amenable to Physiotherapy. These include rehabilitation of patients with cardiovascular/cardiopulmonary diseases such as management of high blood pressure, congestive cardiac failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, bronchitis and tuberculosis among others. Other areas include neurological conditions such as cerebrovascular diseases (e.g. stroke), spinal cord injury and other debilitating illness. The unit is also involved in rehabilitation of diabetic patients, obesity and patients with renal diseases. The unit works in conjunction with departments such as Internal medicine, Neurology, Renal, Accident and Emergency unit as well as Intensive care Unit. Here referrals are sent to the Physiotherapy department for co-managing the patients that need physiotherapy services.

The unit operate both in-patient and out-patient services. The in-patients deals with those patients on admission, while out-patient services deals with patients that come from home. The in-patient services are rendered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while the outpatient services are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ward rounds starts by 10 a.m. while time schedule for the out-patients is 9 a.m.

  1. PAEDIATRICS/OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY UNIT

This unit is in charge of paeditrics/ obstetrics and gynaecological conditions amenable to physiotherapy. Peaditric conditions treated in this unit are: Erb’s palsy, cerebral palsy, injection palsy, injection neuritis, immobilization stiffness secondary to septic arthritis and so on. O & G cases seen for management include: obstetric palsy, urinary incontinence due to weakness of pelvic floor muscles, paraparesis secondary to cancer of the uterus/cervix and so on. All these cases are attended to in our in-patient and out-patient clinics.

In-patients are attended to on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while outpatients are attended to on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The above shows the current organogram in the department. The department is blessed with competent and experienced physiotherapists in various specialties. The contributions of these experienced staff has greatly enhance good clinical outcomes of patients’ care.
