BACKGROUND

Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria was established in 1993 as one of the pioneer Federal Medical Centre in Nigeria. The hospital is located on 58.4 hectares of land and is the only Federal tertiary health facility and referral hospital in Ondo State. The hospital is located in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo- State which is about 48km from Akure, the state capital. The hospital serves the neighbouring states such as Kogi, Edo and Osun States.

The hospital was originally built by then Ondo state government but was taken over by the Federal Government in 1989 and in line with the Federal Government policy establishing a Federal Medical Centre in states without a Federal Teaching hospital, the hospital was made a Federal Medical Centre with the pioneer Board and Medical Director appointed in June, 1993. Since its establishment it has witness tremendous growth in terms of infrastructures and personnel. It currently has a total of 350 bed space with about 85% occupancy. It is equipped with modern laboratory and radiological diagnostic facilities including a well-equipped molecular laboratory for the diagnosis of infectious diseases like Lassa fever, COVID-19 and cholera. Federal Medical Centre, Owo is a centre of excellence in the management of infectious diseases like Lassa fever and COVID-19 disease. The Medical Director is the person of Dr. L. A. Ahmed.

The hospital has a staff strength of 1,441 both clinical and non-clinical staffs, it has 22 clinical and 8 non-clinical departments. In addition, the hospital has accreditation for residency training in departments of Community Health, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, General Surgery, and Ophthalmology. It is worthy of note that most of these departments have produced specialists fully trained in this hospital. Similarly, the hospital trains students from the department of Microbiology and Nursing of Achievers University, Owo which is a private owned university.

Federal Medical Centre, Owo MISSION statement is ‘To initiate and develop quality service delivery by putting in place necessary infrastructure to be able to deliver effective, efficient and affordable health care services to all our patients; this will be sustained through an effective monitoring and evaluation mechanism’ and the VISION is ‘ To provide qualitative, affordable, accessible health care services to our patients at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels with the ultimate goal of reducing morbidity and mortality among Nigerians’.

Automation Room

1. ADMINISTRATIVE BLOCK

The recently renovated and robustly equipped administrative complex building, housing several offices and functions of the hospital administration.

2. RADIOLOGY

The expanded and renovated Radiology complex that houses the newly acquired and installed ultramodern 64-slice Computer Tomograpghy (CT) scanning machine and the ultrasonography suit among others.

3. DIGITAL X-RAY

Recently installed brand new Digital X-ray machine.

4. C-ARM X-RAY MACHINE

Brand new Fluoroscopy (C-Arm) machine installed in the recently expanded and renovated Orthopedic and trauma theatre which has brought immense improvement to the practice of Modern Orthopedics in Federal Medical centre. For instance, hip and knee replacement surgeries are now being carried out in Federal Medical centre, Owo.

5. 64 SLICE COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY SCANNING MACHINE

Recently installed brand new computed tomography machine.

6. MEDICAL WARD

The newly renovated male and female medical ward with impressive spacing, lighting and due diligence done to ensuring patient privacy. The wards are powered with Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), electricity generating sets, and solar inverters.

7. INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

State-of-the-art, ultramodern Intensive care unit (ICU) with multiple ventilators and monitors to help in provision of top-notch intensive care for the critically ill patients.

8. OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGICAL WARDS

The interior of the newly renovated Obstetrics and Gynaecological wards.

9. NEONATAL WARD

The tastefully equipped neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

10. ISOLATION CENTRE

Federal Medical Centre, Owo is a centre of excellence in the management of infectious disease such as Lassa Fever and COVID-19. This is made possible by the provision of the newly built and lavishly equipped Isolation centre used for the specialized care of infectious diseases of public health importance by highly specialized, skilled medical workforce using modern technology. The isolation ward is powered with Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), electricity generating sets, and solar inverters.

11. MOLECULAR LABORATORY

A newly built ultramodern Molecular Laboratory, tastefully equipped with cutting edge technology for practice of modern molecular medicine and research purposes. The molecular laboratory is powered with Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), electricity generating sets, and solar inverters

12. ROADS

A few of the newly constructed and rehabilitated intra-hospital road networks which have significantly improved ease of movement and operation across every part of the hospital community.

13. WALKWAYS

The hospital’s rich network of well covered and lit walkways connecting the various wards and offices. Provides safety and ease of access to every part of the hospital regardless of the weather or time of the day.

14. EMR CAPTURING AREA The newly upgraded modern digitalized Medical Records capturing area with fully automated operation that has brought immense order, speed and safety of operation in a modern tertiary hospital work space.
