Department of Medicine was one of the foundation departments of Federal Medical Centre, Owo when it began Clinical Services in 1994.

Training

The Department of Medicine is also involved in the Postgraduate Medical Training of Resident Doctors by the West African and National Postgraduate Medical Colleges.
The Department also trains House Officers during their one year mandatory Internship programme.
The Department of Internal Medicine has a total complements of 45 nurses out of which 13 of them are trained in renal nursing.

RESPIRATORY UNIT

The Respiratory Unit of Department of Internal Medicine collaborates with the respiratory medicine and cardiothoracic units at the Obafemi Awolowo University Hospital, Ile-Ife also serves as our referral Centre.
The Unit has a Spirometer and consistently performs spirometer every Thursday. It has peak flow meters and pulse oximeters. It is in the process of obtaining a fibre optic bronchoscope and mobile ultrasound machine.
The unit aside ward-based patient care is also involved in running respiratory specialty and general medical clinic and conducting research in various aspects of respiratory medicine.

NEUROLOGY UNIT

The unit provides both Inpatients and outpatient care for patients with Neurological medical illnesses.
The unit is also involved in the training of Registrars for National and West African College of Physicians programme.
The Neurology unit has participated with some Centres on various Medical research and clinical services

GASTROENTEROLOGY UNIT

Gastroenterology Unit Services:
  • Liver biopsy (Blind and guided)
  • Day-case liver biopsy
  • Ultrasound-Guided Needle Aspiration of liver abscess
  • Fine-needle Aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the liver (in conjunction with the Department of Morbid Anatomy and Forensic Medicine).
  • Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) Endoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic)
  • Lower Gastrointestinal (LGI) endoscopy (Procto-sigmoidoscopy and full- length colonoscopy)

CARDIOLOGY UNIT

Cardiology Unit Services:
  • ECG Procedure
  • Echocardiography Procedure
  • The unit is at the current carrying out several researchers both locally and internationally.
  • Ongoing research works such as the collaboration of the unit with the University of Oxford, England on study on cardiovascular function in Lassa fever patients and together with numerous local studies.
